Although it is written in a conversational tone and the content is easily accessible to patients and families, the range and depth of materials presented also make this book useful for health care professionals. Sam and Jane hope these stories will spark dialogue about how to provide the best health care for people as they age.
Dr. Samuel Brody graduated and trained in internal medicine at Vanderbilt University. He is triple boarded in internal medicine, gastroenterology, and geriatrics. He currently is a clinical assistant professor at The Mount Sinai Medical School. He has been recognized as a "Top Doctor" in Queens, NY, for several years. He has published work in Newsweek, the New York Times, Medical Economics, and the Annals of Internal Medicine. Dr. Jane K. Brody is a psychiatric nurse clinician with almost 40 years experience in medical/surgical and psychiatric settings. She has been a nurse educator for almost 30 years and was awarded the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching. For over a decade she was the host of "Your Family's Health" on WHPC, the Nassau Community College station. As a member of the Nassau Community College Speakers Bureau she has lectured across Long Island on the topic of keeping emotionally fit as we age.

This book is a must read for anyone caring for an elder or who cares about navigating the health concerns of a senior they love. My mom and dad, 88 & 89 respectively have been health challenged tremendously over the past year and if I did not have the education this book provided me with, I don't know what I would have done. It offers real life stories through the eyes of a Doctor who cares about the quality of life as opposed to just keeping someone going. I am forever thankful to the authors of this book as it put so much into perspective for me. God Bless the Brodys.Product details

There may come a point and time when you have to discuss the health situation of a loved one. This book does a great job of informing the reader of possible situations, and outcomes when it comes to elderly healthcare. It was a great idea for Jane, a nurse and Sam, a physician to collaborate in writing this book. Their perspective is one that few of us have experienced, which makes the book more important to read. Jane and Sam write about real life situations that one could possibly relate to currently or in the future. One chapter I thought had great information was "I will never put her in a nursing home". It shows that everyone wants what is best for their loved one, even if that's admitting that they need more help than they can provide.
The Voice of Experience is a thoughtful and informative look at providing health care for the elderly, with the intention of helping people to understand how to take care of an aging family member. Written in an informal manner, the authors relate the best ways to get the elderly the care that they need. There is an emphasis on understanding the specific person’s circumstances in order to determine the best holistic and realistic care, which means that as a caretaker or family member you need to be looking for specific things. They explain what you need to look for (signs of inability to live independently, signs of frailty, signs of dementia, etc) in order to correctly formulate exactly what care a person needs. This book provided a lot of information, and I appreciated that the authors approached the topic with such a compassionate, but honest and forthright manner.
Although my parents are yet to reach the point or age of needing any kind of nursing home or hospice care, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I think the authors have a unique perspective since Sam Brody is a physician and his wife, Jane a nurse who have been working in the field for nearly 40 years.
I thought this was a greatly informative and thought provoking read because they write about real life situations and scenarios that we may all one day have to face. I think we have all said "I would never put my parents in a nursing home" but I never really considered the possibility that it may come to be the best and safest option. None of us want to face the realization that our parent's health will one day deteriorate and we will be responsible in making some of the hardest decisions in life but I truly believe that reading this book has prepared me. I would recommend this book to everyone but especially those who have elderly parents or relatives and need good advice and guidance in making the hard decisions.
I find this book very helpful because much of what is considered and explained I am experiencing with my 80 yr. old mom. Thanks Dr. Brody and wife.
I read this book from cover to cover and although the book needs some further editorial input I consider it a must reading for all of us. I say this because all us will eventually face the issues that the folks mentioned in this book did. Some of the chapters are divine such as "Should I come", "She should live another 20 years" and the very well written chapter on the "Futile Care and Health Care decision Making". Others should have been written with more details. I needed so much to know more about Dr Sumner's story during the last weeks of his life to further illustrate the futility of the decisions of the health care system and its providers. May be next time. Congratulations Drs Sam and Jane Brody on your efforts to contribute to the dialogue that this nation should have begun many decades ago.
Dr. Brody and his wife have presented a very erudite and accessible book on geriatric medicine. It covers all the major areas of interest and allows the lay reader to come to grips with the key aspects of geriatrics. The sections on the quality of life, as well as health care decisions are excellent. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is a patient or to the spouse or relative of such a patient. I have already used the information and advice in this book and will again in the future.
This book offers wonderful insight from the professional world on how to navigate the world of aging parents. I was of the mindset "do whatever it takes" until I read that these invasive procedures are not improving the quality of life for our loved ones. The doctors explain what to watch for in subtle changes as well as how to handle drastic declines. I highly recommend this book.
